The declaration came out, so the men bellied up
To the bar for their last drink of freedom for a while
They would march on the land, and they'd sail on the see
To fight in a war that might just damn well kill 'em
They had gone to fight to keep us safe and free
Yes, they'd fight to promote Democracy
Yes, they'd fight and they'd bleed and they'd die
They Were to Believe everything they were being told
Silent enemy ruled the night, yet he dug in for the fight
Death and darkness all around him
Why are we hear was the cry, to fight for freedom the reply
So the dawn's early light found Johnny fightin'
He had gone to fight to keep us safe and free
Yes he'd fight for apple pie, Mom and Liberty
Yes, he'd fight and he'd bleed and he'd cry
He was to believe everything he was being told
He came home all alone, too many comrades had died
Fighting for a cause they had believed in
A woman spit in his face as he was wheeled from the plane
Was she too blind to see why he'd been fighting?
He had gone to fight to keep that woman free
Yes, he fought--He was protecting you and me
Or so he thought, and he bled, and he survived
He was to believe everything he was being told
They Were to Believe
